How to make a Dong Ho painting
Giấy điệp is a piece of special paper used as the surface for a Dong Ho painting. The scallop shells will be crushed into powders then mixed with mortar making from glutinous rice. This unique type of paper helps maintain the durability of colors.
The colors used in Dong Ho paintings are natural colors such as red color (made from red gravels), black color (made from burnt bamboo leaves), yellow color (made from aniseeds), green color (made from cajuput leaves), white color (made from egg shells). Dong Ho paintings generallyemploys only some basic colors above.
The painting process requires the elaborateness. The artist will attach the woodblock with paint then press them on a sheet of paper until they have a nice painting. The woodcuts are carefully engraved by hand. The picture after being covered with hồ nếp to increase the durability of colors will be dried in the sun.
